RADIOACTIVE WASP NEST FOUND IN SOUTH CAROLINA

A radioactive wasp nest was found near the Savannah River Site nuclear facility in South Carolina on July 3, 2025. The nest’s contamination level exceeded federal regulations by over ten times.
It was sprayed to kill wasps, and no contamination was detected in the surrounding area or on individual wasps. The area was secured, and no impacts were reported to workers, the environment, or the public.
The Department of Energy considers it an onsite contamination issue, not a loss of control.
