REPORT FINDS TVA NOT ADEQUATELY PROTECTING COAL PLANT WORKERS’ HEALTH
A report released on the TVA’s industrial hygiene program found the utility is not adequately looking out for the health of its workers.
Assistant Inspector General for Audits and Evaluations David P. Wheeler says in the document the Tennessee Valley Authority used limited information to identify and evaluate health hazards. It also says TVA did not monitor potential hazards full, nor did it formally evaluate specific risks at its coal plants.
Wheeler added workers were potentially exposed to chemicals like ammonia, hydrogen, nitric acid, pebble lime, mold, and radiation.
Auditors found TVA did not provide adequate monitoring at plants that were or are about to be closed. Tennessee Valley Authority plans to phase out all coal plants, including the Roane County facility, by the year 2035.
