ROANE COUNTY COMMISSION OPPOSED TO SCHOOL VOUCHER PROGRAM

Last night, the Roane County Commission approved a resolution stating their opposition to Governor Bill Lee’s School Voucher Program.

State Senator Ken Yager and State Representative Monty Fritts oppose the plan to give $7,000 to any student who may wish to attend a private school rather than a public school, regardless of family income.

The program was proposed in the budget by Governor Lee.

The plan would eventually eliminate income requirements and change who could benefit from the vouchers rather than giving students from low-income families an opportunity to attend private schools — the original stated purpose of Lee’s education savings account program. The universal vouchers could also subsidize tuition costs for students from more affluent families who already attend private schools.
