ROANE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD PASSES 67 MILLION BUDGET, NO FUNDING INCLUDED FOR PROPOSED SUPER HIGH SCHOOL

The Roane County Board of Education unanimously passed their $67 million budget for the upcoming 2017-18 school year in a special-called meeting this week. The budget includes a 2-percent raise for all employees but does not include significant funding for the school building program. In May, the school board approved a plan to build a new consolidated high school to replace Roane County High School, Rockwood High School and Harriman High School at an estimated cost of around $50 million and a completion date of 2020. In the meeting, Roane County School Board member Mike Miller stated he thought the right thing was to build a new school for three high schools and wanted to send something to the county commission that would possibly pass. Board member Danny Wright agreeing with Miller and went a further and said it’s now time for the county commission to step up to the plate and do what is right. The Roane County Commission meets this Monday evening (June 12, 2017) but as far as the agenda looks now, the commission will not discuss the issue at this time.
