ROCKSLIDE ON I-40 AT TENNESSEE/N. CAROLINA LINE TO REOPEN WITH RESTRICTIONS

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is reporting that I-40 close to the Tennessee line will remain closed for about a week. A rock slide Friday night shut down traffic in both directions. Officials had hoped to re-open that stretch of interstate by late Saturday afternoon, but heavy rain and more slides have prolonged the delay. They now hope to have some traffic flow in the area by Saturday, March 2. They also stress that, once the roadway is reopened to traffic, there will be restrictions, with only one lane open in each direction. This is expected to remain in place for 6 to 8 weeks. Motorists should plan for lengthy detours which could add an hour or more of extra drive time.
