ROCKWOOD CAR CRASH CAUSED BY PUPPY DISTRACTION

On Sunday afternoon, just after 3:00 p.m., Rockwood fire, police, and an ambulance responded to the 900 block of North Chamberlain Avenue, where a vehicle had veered off the roadway at the Carpenter Street intersection and struck a pole near the edge of the road.
According to Officer Jacob Cunningham’s report, he and Officer J. Cofer arrived at the scene and spoke with the driver, 75-year-old Joan Gardner. She stated she was unsure of what happened but had driven through a yard and struck a fence after leaving the roadway in front of 918 N. Chamberlain Avenue while traveling south.
The vehicle first hit a mailbox, then crushed the left side of a driveway culvert, and continued through the yard, leaving tire marks until it collided with a fence, pushing in its lower section. While being evaluated by EMS, Ms. Gardner explained to Officer Cofer that a puppy in a box on the front seat had climbed out, distracting her and causing the crash.
EMS cleared her with no injuries.
