ROCKWOOD CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERS SPEED CAMERAS FOR SCHOOL ZONES
A representative from Blue Line Solutions LLC of Chattanooga attended the most recent Rockwood City Council meeting to present speed and traffic data collected in local school zones. Over a five-day period beginning September 30, the company monitored vehicle speeds and volumes on Rockwood Avenue near Rockwood High School and Middle School, as well as on Strong Street, both of which border the campus. During school hours—particularly when the speed limit drops to 20 mph for morning arrival and afternoon dismissal—the study recorded a total of 3,693 vehicles on these two streets and identified 110 speeding violations.
On Nelson Street, which runs directly in front of Ridgeview Elementary School, the five-day study counted 5,857 vehicles and documented 740 speeding violations.
The council is considering a contract with Blue Line Solutions to install automated speed-enforcement cameras in these school zones. The cameras would capture violations and transmit data to the company, which would then issue civil citations carrying a $50 fine. Under the proposed arrangement, the City of Rockwood would receive 40% of the revenue generated. Blue Line already operates a similar program at one school in Knox County and expects to expand across the region in the coming months.
No action was taken at the meeting, but the council is expected to approve the contract with Blue Line Solutions for school-zone speed cameras in the near future. We’ll keep you updated as this develops.
