ROCKWOOD MAN SETS OUT TO CLIMB HIGHEST POINT IN EVERY STATE

Jim Merritt, a 65-year-old resident of Rockwood, has made it his life’s mission to climb the highest peak in every U.S. state, according to a report by WATE. Initially an unplanned endeavor, Merritt realized he had already summited about 25 state high points during road trips out west, prompting him to commit to conquering all 50.

His journey has included diverse experiences, from challenging hikes to unique destinations like Kansas’ high point in a farmer’s pigsty. Merritt’s passion for climbing has been shared with his family, including his wife Susan, daughters, and potentially his grandchildren.

With only Gannett Peak in Wyoming remaining, a challenging 50-mile trek, Merritt hopes to complete his goal later this year despite knee issues, anticipating a profound sense of accomplishment.
