Roane State Community College has initiated the Larry V. Sherrill Memorial Scholarship.

Larry V. Sherrill was a deeply dedicated public servant and community advocate from Cumberland County, Tennessee, who passed away on August 3, 2025, at the age of 58 after a period of health complications. Following high school, Larry began his career in the local school system before serving as a police officer and investigator. He then spent 20 years (across five terms) as Cumberland County’s Circuit Court Clerk, where he became a passionate champion for justice, fairness, and second chances—often guided by his personal motto, “Dale Elmore gave me a chance—everybody needs a chance.” Known for his warm personality, he never met a stranger, loved building relationships, supported the underdog, and was actively involved with the Shriners while living out a strong faith in the Lord.

In honor of Larry’s lifelong commitment to helping others—especially those who had lost their way—his family, friends, and community have established the Larry V. Sherrill Memorial Endowment Scholarship at Roane State Community College. This permanent endowment aims to support students pursuing degrees in criminal justice, reflecting Larry’s passion for the field and public service.

The goal is to reach $25,000, at which point the fund will provide at least one annual scholarship in perpetuity, with potential for more if additional funds are raised. As of recent updates, approximately $10,600 has been raised toward this target. Contributions of any size are welcomed to help build this lasting legacy, and even sharing the information is valuable.

Donations can be made online via the Roane State Foundation’s dedicated page (linked below), or checks can be mailed to Roane State Foundation, 276 Patton Lane, Harriman, TN 37748, with “LARRY V. SHERRILL ENDOWMENT FUND” noted in the memo line. The initiative encourages everyone to “Love Like Larry” by continuing his spirit of compassion, belief in people’s potential, and support for those chasing dreams in justice-related fields.
