SECRETARY OF STATE URGES CAUTION WHEN DONATING TO FIRE AND STORM RELIEF

During this time of wildfires devastating Gatlinburg and severe storm damage in McMinn County, Scretary of State Tre Hargett is urging people to use caution when trying to help assist victims through monetary donations. Hargett says we should be diligent in giving to only reputable organizations so that they can best assist the people of Gatlinburg and Sevier and McMinn Counties. He says you should not be pressured into giving cash donations to people you don’t know. Unfortunately, during disasters there are scam artists who prey on the public’s generosity. If a nonprofit asks you for a contribution, check to see if it is registered with the Division of Charitable Solicitations, Fantasy Sports and Gaming. Ask questions about how and who will benefit from your donation. Do your research and don’t assume a social media or blog recommendation has been approved by the nonprofit. Avoid giving cash. Always ask for a receipt if your contribution is tax deductible. And pay close attention to the name of the nonprofit organization, as there are many with similar names.
