SEMI TRUCK SLAMS INTO BRIDGE SUPPORT ON I-40 IN PUTNAM COUNTY

On Saturday night at approximately 11:00 p.m., the Putnam County Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck on Interstate 40 near Exit 273. The truck collided with the support pillars of an overpass. The driver was found outside the vehicle with only minor injuries and declined medical transport.

Firefighters discovered that the truck’s fuel tank had been compromised and was leaking fuel into a nearby ditch. Crews quickly worked to contain and manage the spill while requesting assistance from Putnam County EMA. Although no obvious damage was visible to the bridge structure, TDOT was called to inspect it as a precaution.

Emergency personnel remained on scene until about 5:00 a.m. to address the fuel leak and complete operations, with one lane of travel impacted during the incident.
