SEVERE STORMS KNOCKS POWER OUT TO THOUSANDS

A line of storms roughly four counties wide running west to east traveled south from Kentucky into Tennessee late yesterday (Saturday, June 12, 2021) leaving a trail of damage in its path.

Cumberland, Fentress, and Pickett County saw trees knocked down in several places throughout the area.

VEC reported at the height of the outage around 18,000 without power around 6:30 p.m. central. As it got to around midnight, that figure dropped to over half. Crews worked until around 4 a.m. this morning to restore services.

In Roane and Morgan County, the brunt of the storm hit the Oliver Springs and Mossy Grove area. Crews had to cut their way to clear downed trees to make repairs. Harriman Utility Board’s outage map showed over 8,000 people were without power in their service area as of 9 p.m. eastern last night.

In Rhea and Overton County, officials reported numerous trees down from high winds projected in excess of 40 to 50 miles per hour.

Hail was also detected as large as 1 inch in a couple of the storms yesterday.

The National Weather Service issued significant weather advisories for at least 5 counties including Cumberland around 6 p.m. last night but no warnings were put into place. The weather service did not have a severe thunderstorm or tornado watch issued at the time the damage took place. Citizens reported seeing a slight rotation in the clouds in a couple of sites.
