SIGNIFICANT FLOODING POSSIBLE AS HEAVY RAINFALL EXPECTED ACROSS THE REGION

A prolonged period of wet weather is expected this week, bringing the potential for significant flooding across the region. According to the National Weather Service in Nashville and Morristown, multiple rounds of moderate to heavy rain could result in 4 to 7 inches of rainfall for most areas, with some isolated locations potentially seeing over 8 inches.

The first wave of heavy precipitation is expected to arrive Monday night through Thursday, with another round developing over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday. This extended period of rainfall raises serious concerns for flash flooding, as well as stream and river flooding, particularly in flood-prone areas. Additionally, mudslides and rockslides may occur in hilly and mountainous terrain, further compounding travel hazards.

Adding to the concern, high winds are possible across East Tennessee this weekend. With saturated soil conditions, trees may become more vulnerable to falling, leading to a greater risk of power outages and road blockages.

The Weather Prediction Center’s Excessive Rainfall Outlook highlights Middle and East Tennessee as areas of concern, particularly on Tuesday, February 11, and Wednesday, February 12, 2025. The yellow-shaded areas on the maps indicate a slight risk (at least 15%) of excessive rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding, rising creeks and rivers, and road closures. The green-shaded areas indicate a marginal risk (at least 5%), meaning localized flooding is possible. The highest risk remains concentrated in southern and southeastern Tennessee, where flood-prone areas are particularly vulnerable.

Residents are urged to remain alert and prepared as forecasted rainfall amounts may be adjusted throughout the week. Emergency management officials warn that rising waters could create hazardous travel conditions, and those living in low-lying areas should be ready to take action if necessary.
