SNEAD STATE FALL INVITATIONAL TESTS LADY RAIDERS DEPTH
RSCC – BOAZ, Ala. — Despite battling injury and being unable to field a full team, the Roane State Lady Raiders women’s golf program showed promise at the Snead State Fall Invitational this week, led by sophomore Sydney Romer, who finished tied for sixth in a field of 78 competitors.
Head coach Rick Maharry said the tournament tested his roster’s depth after an untimely injury left the Lady Raiders with only three players able to compete individually rather than as a team.
“Our performance was okay overall,” Maharry said. “Unfortunately, one of the girls had an injury, and that put us down to only three, so we couldn’t play as a team in the tournament – only individual competition, but Sydney (Romer)had a great tournament.”
Romer opened with an 86 in the first round, then stormed back with a final-round 76, moving up more than a dozen spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for sixth — narrowly missing the all-tournament team. Maharry praised Romer’s steady improvement, particularly in her short game.
“Her ball striking has been really good, and her chipping has improved a lot,” Maharry said. “That’s made a huge difference in her scoring. I try to give her space when she’s playing welltoo, and watch from a distance — and she handled herself great out there.”
Maharry said Romer’s recent performances have her ranked 20th nationally, and he hopes her continued consistency will earn another TCCAA Player of the Week honor after taking home the accolade twice earlier this season.
Freshman Raegan Corvette and Baye Dobbs also competed individually, with Maharry noting that both are developing well in different areas.
“Raegan’s hitting the ball really well,” he said. “We just have to get her to relax — it’s more mental than physical. In practice rounds, she’s a 74 or 75 shooter. Once she trusts herself, she’ll get there.”
“Baye continues to build confidence and consistency,” Maharry added. “She listens well and if she avoids a few tough holes, she will shoot right around a career best.“
Roane State will conclude its fall schedule later this month with the Jefferson State Invitational in Jasper, Alabama, where the Lady Raiders hope to see continued improvement and a return to full strength.
