SOUTH CUMBERLAND UTILITY MOVES TOWARD C.P.W.A. MERGER

The Crossville Chronicle reports that the South Cumberland Utility District, which serves the Lake Tansi area, unanimously voted at its Tuesday morning meeting to send a resolution to the Cumberland Plateau Water Authority (CPWA), advancing the potential merger of the two utilities, though not finalizing it. Board members raised concerns about the city of Crossville’s involvement, with James Barnawell questioning whether the CPWA could function without the city and expressing skepticism about Crossville’s willingness to relinquish its assets.
CPWA General Manager Jeff Dyer confirmed that the authority could operate independently and noted that both the city and county mayors support the initiative. However, Crossville’s participation might require a referendum due to ongoing legal discussions, particularly regarding Meadow Park Lake. Barnawell remained unconvinced, citing concerns about rising rates if Crossville does not join, while Joe Salvato suggested rates might increase regardless. The board also discussed engaging the Tansi POA for community feedback, with POA General Manager Sam McAdoo offering to organize a town hall and send an email blast to members. The Chronicle sought comment from Crossville Mayor RJ Crawford but received no response.
