SPARTA MAN ARRESTED AFTER HIDING UNDER FURNITURE TO EVADE DEPUTIES
A Sparta man is facing charges after attempting to hide under furniture to avoid arrest on Monday afternoon, according to a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
Michael Lynn Vernon, 51, was taken into custody on June 22, 2026, following a coordinated effort between Putnam and Cumberland County authorities at a residence located at Glade Creek Road.
According to the report filed by Deputy Joshua Alderman, the incident began around 3:05 PM when Cumberland County deputies responded to the scene to assist Putnam County Lt. Reams in serving an outstanding warrant. Lt. Reams reported seeing a male, later identified as Vernon, carrying a duffle bag into the home.
As deputies approached the residence, Deputy Jordan Winningham observed someone closing the window blinds and curtains from the inside and turning off a light. Despite multiple loud announcements identifying themselves as law enforcement and demanding Vernon step outside, there was no response.
The homeowner informed deputies that he was the only other person supposed to be in the house and gave law enforcement permission to enter the residence to apprehend Vernon.
Upon entering the home, deputies discovered Vernon intentionally hiding in a back room beneath miscellaneous furniture. He was extracted and taken into custody without further incident at approximately 4:44 PM.
Vernon has been charged with evading arrest. He is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on August 3, 2026.
