STATE SPORTS BETTING BILL PASSES LEGISLATIVE SUBCOMMITTEE

Legalized sports betting has taken a step closer toward passage in Tennessee. HB1 was approved Wednesday by the Departments and Agencies Subcommittee. It was the first of several hurdles the bill faces.

The proposed bill leaves the option to allow sports betting up to local governments in the state. It would impose a 10 percent tax on sports gambling – a move some estimate could generate as much as $30 million a year for state coffers. Thirty percent of that would be earmarked for local infrastructure and K-12 education.

A similar bill is working its way through the State Senate.
