STRONG STORMS POSSIBLE TODAY FOLLOWED BY DANGEROUS HEAT THROUGH NEXT WEEK

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across Tennessee this afternoon and evening, with a few storms possibly becoming strong to marginally severe—especially along and east of Interstate 65. The primary threats will be gusty winds up to 60 mph, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall capable of causing localized flooding. The Storm Prediction Center maintains a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) across Middle and East Tennessee, including Crossville, Jamestown, and Knoxville. Farther east, Johnson City and parts of the northeastern corner of the state are under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5), where the potential for damaging winds and heavier rainfall is a bit more pronounced. A second round of storms may arrive later in the day, particularly in southern portions of the Tennessee Valley.
Once today’s storm chances diminish, the focus quickly shifts to dangerous heat building into the region by the weekend. Temperatures will climb into the low to mid-90s starting Friday, and heat index values are expected to soar between 98 and 106 degrees through early next week. A prolonged period of moderate to major heat risk is forecast across Middle Tennessee, including Columbia, Clarksville, Murfreesboro, and Cookeville. According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create dangerous conditions for those without access to cooling or hydration. Meanwhile, the NWS in Morristown highlights similar concerns for East Tennessee, with heat indices exceeding 100 degrees and a moderate risk of heat-related illness beginning Sunday.
Residents are strongly encouraged to stay hydrated, reduce time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day, wear light-colored clothing, and check on vulnerable populations. This extended stretch of high heat will likely persist into the middle of next week, with little overnight relief in some areas.
