SUSPECT HELD WITHOUT BOND AFTER LEADING POLICE ON CHASE

Just after 8:30 Saturday morning, a Cumberland County deputy observed a vehicle doing well over the 55 mph limit on Highway 70 West. The deputy initiated a traffic stop, but the suspect, 43-year-old James Kelly Bolin of Crossville, fled the scene. He engaged deputies in a miles-long chase, at speeds exceeding 110 miles per hour. During the chase, Bolin failed to stop at multiple stop signs and passed several vehicles in no-passing zones. Deputies followed Bolin for half an hour, traveling into White County; he turned onto Rail Road Grade Road, then onto Deer Run Road, Red Road to State Highway 1, and back onto Highway 70 West.

Bolin continued on through several more turns – onto Old State Road, Frazier Road and onto Browntown Road.

Near the intersection with Red Road, law enforcement laid out stop sticks; Bolin drove recklessly off the left side of the road to avoid them. Coming back onto the roadway, he turned onto Eastland Road and onto Clifty Road.

Some two miles down Clifty Road, Bolin crossed a bridge and turned right onto a dirt road. About 9 a.m., Bolin reached the end of the road and fled on foot toward Clifty River.

During a foot pursuit, Bolin removed from his waistband and dropped a holstered 9mm Ruger as he approached the river. He was reported to be wearing jeans and a Harley Davidson jacket when he crossed the river.

The suspect’s vehicle, a black BMW reported stolen from Rutherford County, was abandoned with three flat tires. Found inside the vehicle were multiple baggies commonly used for packaging narcotics. Also found was another handgun, a Cobra .38 caliber pistol. Meanwhile, a Crossville Police K-9 unit arrived to assist in tracking Bolin.

Dispatch alerted searchers that a Tennessee Highway Patrol unit had spotted a subject matching Bolin’s description walking along a fence row near a wooded area near Todd Town Road.

Local law-enforcement personnel were unsuccessful in tracking Bolin and subsequently left the search area along the river about 10:45 a.m.

Just before 1:00 that afternoon, Bolin was apprehended during a traffic stop in White County.

The driver of the vehicle refused to permit a search , so K-9 Mojo was deployed for a sniff search around the outside of the car. He indicated the presence of an odor of illegal narcotics. A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up a soaking-wet Harley Davidson jacket, identified as the one Bolin had been wearing, and two sopping-wet plastic baggies containing meth, weighing a total of 13.67 grams.

At the time of his arrest, Bolin had approximately $1,400 in cash on his person.

Bolin, a convicted felon, was charged with felony aggravated assault, theft of property, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony and manufacture, sale, delivery or possession of meth, two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon and three counts of evading arrest. He was taken into custody and held without bond pending a January 24 hearing in General Sessions court.
