CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – As part of the US 70 (SR 24) bridge replacement project over the Obed River, Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) contract crews will fully close the bridge beginning Wednesday, November 19, 2025. The closure will remain in place through the project’s expected completion in December 2026.

signed detour will be in place to guide motorists around the closure via SR 462 (Northside Drive) and SR 1 (Sparta Highway). Message boards will be deployed seven days in advance to notify local traffic of the upcoming closure.

While the contractor will begin preliminary work this week, including staking construction signs (weather permitting), the full closure of SR 24 will not begin until November 19. Until then, work will proceed without a permanent road closure.

As part of the project commitments, access to Obed River Park will be maintained throughout construction.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, expect delays, and use caution while traveling through the work zone. This work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled in case of inclement weather or other unforeseen conditions.

As always, motorists are reminded to use TDOT’s motorist information tools and Know Before You Go! by checking travel conditions before departure. Drivers should never tweet, text, or talk on the phone while driving. For the latest updates, visit the TDOT SmartWay Map or dial 511 for statewide travel information.

Tennessee’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over for highway workers and emergency vehicles. Violation of this law can result in up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.
