T.D.O.T. IMPROVES TRAFFIC PATTERN ON S.R. 136 IN PUTNAM COUNTY

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Drivers traveling along SR 136 (South Jefferson Avenue) in Putnam County should be aware of upcoming road construction activities that will impact traffic. As part of the 2.3-mile project to widen and improve SR 136 from I-40 to SR 111, Tennessee Department of Transportation contract crews will modify scheduled lane closures on Jefferson Avenue in both directions near the I-40 interchange beginning Friday, August 15, 2025, and continuing through October 31, 2025.

TDOT has worked with the contractor to improve the traffic control plan by keeping two lanes open in each direction on Jefferson Avenue during this next phase of construction. This change will help alleviate congestion, rather than reducing the road to one lane in each direction as originally planned.

“Every project comes with its own unique set of challenges and potential disruptions to traffic flow,” says TDOT Region 2 Director Danny Oliver. “That’s why minimizing congestion is built into our process, from thoughtful planning during the design phase to ongoing adjustments throughout construction. We’re always looking for better ways to keep traffic moving through Tennessee.”

Traveling North on Jefferson Avenue:

  • The right turn lane to I-40 East near Ferrell Drive will still be closed, but drivers will have access to I-40 East in this location. This revised lane configuration was originally scheduled for today but has been rescheduled for tomorrow.

SR 111 South Exit to Jefferson Avenue:

  • Construction on this ramp continues and will provide better access from SR 111 to Jefferson Avenue. The contractor completed the first concrete pour today, with another scheduled early next week. Before the ramp can open, the concrete will need to cure long enough to pass TDOT’s required strength testing to ensure quality and safety.
  • The ramp is currently scheduled to be fully reopened to traffic in three weeks.

This work is essential to improving safety, traffic flow, and long-term infrastructure along SR 136. TDOT is committed to improving road conditions for drivers during construction while still delivering improvements the corridor needs.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution and expect delays in the area. This work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled in case of inclement weather or other unforeseen conditions.

As always, motorists are reminded to use TDOT’s motorist information tools and Know Before You Go! by checking travel conditions before departure. Drivers should never tweet, text, or talk on the phone while driving. For the latest updates, visit the TDOT SmartWay Map or dial 511 for statewide travel information.

Tennessee’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over for highway workers and emergency vehicles. Violating this law can result in up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.
