The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has said 24-year-old Anthony Orlando Bowers of Asheville, North Carolina, died from injuries sustained after he shot two Greeneville police officers Sunday.

Third District Attorney General Dan Armstrong asked TBI to investigate the shooting on the 100 block of Mason Street.

Investigators say Assistant Greeneville Police Chief Michael Crum reported two officers were shot while attempting to take a suspect into custody. Both officers were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A TBI release says Greenville police tried to stop a speeding vehicle on Tusculum Boulevard before being led on a chase that ended on Mason Street. The suspect exited the vehicle and ran into an apartment complex nearby.

A female passenger identified the driver as Joshua Howard and said they lived together on the 100 block of Mason Street.

She took officers to the apartment and gave consent to search for Howard. When entering, officers identified themselves and encountered Bowers, who did not live there.

For reasons still under investigation, Bowers became combative, pulled a gun on the officers, and fired shots, striking two of the officers, who returned fire, striking Bowers.

He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Both officers were also transported for treatment of injuries.

Howard was later taken into custody by Greeneville police.

The investigation is active and ongoing. TBI does not identify officers involved in such incidents.
