TBI INVESTIGATES OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN KNOX COUNTY
TBI agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Knox County at the request of 6th Judicial District Attorney General Charme Allen. Early Tuesday morning, just before 2:30 a.m., Knox County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on a small motorcycle in the 4000 block of Clinton Highway. The motorcycle was being driven without headlights, a license plate, or a helmet. During the stop, the driver reportedly presented a knife, prompting one deputy to fire shots and strike the man. The driver was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No deputies were injured in the incident.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is independently examining the sequence of events by collecting evidence and conducting interviews. The TBI will share its findings with the District Attorney General for her review and consideration. As fact-finders, the TBI does not determine whether the officer’s actions were justified—that decision rests solely with the District Attorney General. The TBI also does not publicly identify the involved officers and directs such questions to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
