TBI RELEASES ANNUAL “CRIME ON CAMPUS” REPORT

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has released its annual Crime on Campus report. The study is based on the findings of the Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System. Colleges, universities, and law enforcement agencies submit data to the TBI through TIBRS. The TBI said crime reported by colleges and universities in the state increased slightly by 0.8% from 2015 to 2016. 27% of all offenses in 2016 were categorized as larceny/theft. Fraud offenses went up by 8% in 2016 with a major jump in the category of impersonation-related crimes with a 177% increase from 13 in 2015 and 36 in 2016. Assault numbers grew by 21% year-to-year. The TBI mentioned there was a 27% decrease in reported rape offenses from 62 in 2015 to 45 in 2016. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville saw an increase in reported sex offenses, kidnapping/abduction, assault offenses, extortion/blackmail, larceny/theft, destruction/damage/vandalism, weapon law violations, and disorderly conduct.
