TBI SAYS SHOOTINGS INVOLVING POLICE OFFICERS INCREASING
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says in a new report that shootings involving police officers in the state are on the rise. According to the information released, between 2011 and 2015, the TBI responded to around 49 such incidents annually. In 2016 that number was driven to 70. The agency expects to work at least that many such shootings or more this year. The TBI has already responded to 18 shootings since January, including one in Rockwood and one in Cocke County. The numbers do not reflect Knoxville or Knox County where they say the numbers are lower. The TBI is utilized as only an investigative tool in such cases. Findings are then turned over to the District Attorney who makes the final decisions on the investigation.
