TBI TO ASSIST IN DETERMINING CAUSE OF CUMBERLAND CO. ELECTION COMMISSION BUILDING FIRE
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will assist the Crossville Fire Department and the Cumberland County Fire Department in determining the cause of a blaze at the Cumberland County Election Commission building late last night.
Crossville Fire Chief Chris South told 3B Media News this morning the initial call of the blaze came in just after 9 p.m. last night.
Around half of the structure sustained damage in the fire, mainly to the large storage area on the east side of the building.
Chief South stated the offices of the election commission on the west side of the building sustained very minimal damage, mainly because of smoke, but no water damage.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
The entire building was locked down after the fire was put out. A couple of firefighters remained on scene overnight to watch for possible rekindling of the fire. Crossville police officers were also present to provide security for the lockdown.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
It is not uncommon for the TBI to be called in to help investigate since it is a county-owned building and the nature of the office located there.
More information will be released at a later time.
Election officials say this will not delay the upcoming election. Some voting machines were lost in the fire. The county election commission will work with state election officials to get back as normal as possible for the next election. All of the registration records were backed up in the Cumberland County election commission office.
