TDOT SUSPENDS ALL ROAD CONSTRUCTION LANE CLOSURES FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Tennessee’s highways will have no construction-related lane closures over the Memorial Day weekend. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is suspending all such closures on interstates and state routes from noon on Friday, May 22, through 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, to maximize roadway capacity and support smooth travel for what is expected to be a record number of drivers.
AAA forecasts that 950,000 Tennesseans will travel during the holiday, with 795,000 of them going by car. TDOT Commissioner Will Reid emphasized the department’s goal of ensuring a safe and efficient holiday, reminding drivers to move over and slow down for first responders and TDOT HELP trucks. Motorists may still face restrictions in long-term construction zones, where reduced speed limits apply, and speeding fines can reach up to $500 plus court costs when workers are present.
Travelers can check real-time conditions via www.TNSmartWay.com/Traffic or by calling 511, and are urged to plan ahead, know before they go, and avoid distracted driving.
