TWO MEN SENTENCED TO LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE IN PUTNAM COUNTY FOR SHOOTING TENNESSEE TROOPER

In Putnam County, Tennessee, Timothy Laquan Davis, Jr. and Braze Roland Rucker were sentenced today following their March jury convictions. Both men received life without the possibility of parole for the attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, marking the first time this sentence has been imposed in Tennessee for that specific charge.

Davis, classified as a Range II multiple offender, was also sentenced to 10 years for employing a firearm during a dangerous felony (consecutive), 10 years for theft over $10,000 (consecutive), and 20 years for possession of a firearm by a violent felon (consecutive). Rucker, a Range I standard offender, received 4 years for facilitation of employing a firearm during a dangerous felony (consecutive at 100%), 6 years for theft over $10,000 (consecutive), and 12 years for possession of a firearm by a violent felon (consecutive).

The sentences stem from a July 19, 2024, incident on Interstate 40 near the Willow Avenue Exit. During a routine traffic stop, Trooper Adam Cothron was shot by Davis as he approached the vehicle, after Rucker rolled down the passenger window. The pair then fled, leaving the wounded trooper on the highway shoulder. Victim impact statements were given by Trooper Cothron, his wife Gena, and his father during the hearing. Trooper Cothron, who continues to serve with the Tennessee Department of Safety despite his injuries, described the attack and its impact.

District Attorney Bryant Dunaway emphasized accountability for violent criminals, protection of the public, and support for the Cothron family, who continue to endure significant hardship.
