The Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) has announced the distribution of $25 million in federal grant funds statewide for the 2026–2027 federal fiscal year, aimed at curbing crashes and improving driver behavior.
Provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the funding supports more than 350 federal grants awarded to law enforcement agencies and highway safety partners across the state.
Key highlights of the funding initiative include:
-
Community Support: Over 350 grants distributed to local law enforcement, emergency responders, non-profit organizations, and district attorneys general meeting data-driven safety criteria.
-
Public Education: Approximately $3 million dedicated specifically to statewide highway safety education and public awareness campaigns.
-
Comprehensive Approach: Funding will bolster training, advocacy, public awareness, and enforcement initiatives as part of the state’s mission toward zero traffic fatalities.
“These funds will strengthen the traffic safety programs and initiatives statewide that make Tennessee roadways safer,” said TDOSHS Commissioner Jeff Long. THSO Director Buddy Lewis emphasized that these collaborative partnerships remain essential to improving driver behavior and protecting the public.
