TENNESSEE DEATH ROW INMATE SELECTS LAST MEAL

NASHVILLE, TN A Tennessee inmate scheduled for execution by lethal injection Thursday has selected his last meal. The Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) says Oscar Smith, 72, has selected a double bacon cheeseburger, deep-dish apple pie, and vanilla bean ice cream for his last meal. It will be provided to him on Thursday.
Smith was moved to death watch Tuesday. He was convicted of fatally stabbing and shooting his estranged wife, Judith Smith, and her sons Jason and Chad Burnett, 13 and 16, at their Nashville home on Oct. 1, 1989. Smith has maintained that he is innocent. The state Court of Criminal Appeals ruled last week that Smith didn’t provide evidence that he is innocent of the murders.
On Tuesday, Gov. Bill Lee said he would not intervene in the execution of Smith, who had requested clemency from the governor.
The state has not put any inmates to death since February 2020, when Nicholas Sutton died in the electric chair. Executions were put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
