TENNESSEE RIGHT TO LIFE OPPOSES STATE’S PROPOSED FETAL-HEARTBEAT BILL

A prolife group in Tennessee has come out in opposition to the proposed bill that would ban most women from getting an abortion once a fetus’ heartbeat is detected.

Tennessee Right to Life announced yesterday they oppose the bill because it raises too many legal concerns and could weaken the state’s current abortion ban.

Specifically, it cited the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee’s promise to sue the state should the bill pass

Furthermore, it said, the bill would ban abortion once a heartbeat is detected – typically around six weeks’ gestation. This would be a marked change to the current state law that bans abortion beyond viability, at approximately 20 weeks.

Governor Bill Lee, House Speaker Glen Casada and Senate Speaker Randy McNally have all expressed support of the so-called fetal-heartbeat abortion ban.
