TENNESSEE UNEMPLOYMENT HOLDS STEADY AT 3.4% AS STATE LAUNCHES NEW WORKFORCE INITIATIVE

Tennessee’s economic momentum continues as the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 3.4% for September 2026, marking the third consecutive month at this level and dipping slightly below the year-ago figure. This performance outpaces the national unemployment rate, which sat at 4.2% last month.
Key highlights from the latest Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD) report include:
  • Job Growth: Tennessee employers added 28,400 nonfarm jobs over the past year, led by the leisure and hospitality, healthcare and social assistance, and state government sectors. Monthly employment also grew by 2,500 jobs.
  • TNWorks Milestone: Governor Bill Lee’s TNWorks initiative—launched one year ago to assist employers with customized workforce solutions—has already served 6,300 employers in its first year.
  • The TNTalent Program: Building on this success, the state is introducing the TNWorks Talent Accelerator and its new TNTalent program. This initiative allocates $5 million in federal funding to help Tennessee employers support workforce development across three high-demand fields: nuclear energy, artificial intelligence infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing.
