CUMBERLAND COUNTY ISSUES CYBERSECURITY WARNING OVER PHISHING EMAIL DISGUISED AS DEEDS SPREADSHEET
Cumberland County officials have issued an urgent cybersecurity warning following a fraudulent phishing email sent from the Register of Deeds office.
The deceptive email, carrying the subject line “Spreadsheet shared with you: Deeds Info,” contains a malicious attachment. Officials urge anyone who receives the message to delete it immediately without clicking “Open.”
Immediate Action Required for Compromised Accounts
The county has outlined crucial containment steps depending on the level of interaction with the email:
-
If you clicked “Open”: Immediately reset the password for the affected email account to prevent unauthorized access.
-
If you clicked “Open” AND ran an “Adobe update”: Stop using the computer immediately, unplug its network cable to isolate it from the network, and contact county IT support as soon as possible.
Residents and local office staff are advised to remain vigilant against unexpected file-sharing notifications and verify the authenticity of emails before interacting with attachments.
