THP TROOPER ‘CLEARED’ OF CHARGES REGARDING MIDTOWN SHOOTING

Roane County, TN-  District Attorney General Russell Johnson’s office received the TBI investigative file on the officer-involved shooting which includes body camera footage from multiple officers that were at the scene where a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper shot and wounded Brian Wilson.
The THP trooper was one of several law enforcement officers who responded to the 911 call after multiple victims had been shot. The shooting had occurred at a business in the Midtown area of Roane County on March 30th. The shooter, Brian Wilson, shot and killed Amanda Windham and shot Rocky King, and Wilson’s wife/ex-wife, Kelsey Wilson.
The armed officers were searching and trying to apprehend the suspect shooter, Brian Wilson, in a wooded area behind the business near Old Highway 70. Wilson was discovered in a semi-wooded area near an abandoned building when the trooper encountered Wilson moving toward him. The trooper’s body cam clearly shows that Wilson was armed with a handgun that he raised and was pointing at the trooper. Wilson ignored the trooper’s commands to put down the gun and stop advancing. The trooper first tried to fire his rifle, which failed to discharge. The trooper then took up his handgun and shot multiple times hitting Wilson and putting him on the ground.
Wilson was rendered aid by the officers and transported to UT Medical Center where he was treated for his wounds. Wilson recovered days later and is currently incarcerated at the Roane County Jail on other outstanding charges. The case involving Wilson’s alleged shooting is set to be presented to the next Roane County Grand Jury.
District Attorney General Russell Johnson has stated that “Our office has ‘cleared’ the THP trooper in this shooting incident as he acted lawfully to defend himself and other officers in apprehending Brian Wilson who was an obvious danger to the community. The case against Wilson is proceeding to the next Roane County Grand Jury. I commend the trooper and the other officers from THP and other agencies involved for the speedy response and their quick apprehension of the suspect shooter.”
