TORNADO WATCH EXPANDED ACROSS TN

The National Weather Service has issued two Tornado Watches covering a wide swath of the Southeast, including much of Tennessee, northern Georgia, southeastern Kentucky, and northern Alabama. These watches come as a volatile weather system moves through the region, bringing the risk of severe storms, damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes.

Tornado Watch #305 is in effect until 10:00 PM CDT Tuesday, May 20, 2025. This watch includes major cities such as Nashville, Clarksville, Bowling Green, Cookeville, Florence, Huntsville, and Chattanooga. The threat level is significant, with a few tornadoes likely, scattered hail potentially up to tennis ball size, and damaging wind gusts of up to 70 mph. An estimated 5.8 million people, 1,599 schools, and 146 hospitals are located within the watch area.

Tornado Watch #308 remains in effect until 2:00 AM EDT Wednesday, May 21, 2025, and covers eastern Tennessee, southeastern Kentucky, and northern Georgia. Cities included are Knoxville, Morristown, Athens, Dalton, Cartersville, and Gainesville. Like the earlier watch, this one warns of a few tornadoes likely, hail up to tennis ball size, and wind gusts approaching 70 mph. The affected area includes approximately 3.6 million residents, over 1,000 schools, and 85 hospitals.

Residents are urged to remain weather aware through the night and be prepared to seek shelter if warnings are issued. These storms are capable of producing life-threatening conditions, and nighttime tornadoes are especially dangerous due to reduced visibility and slower response times.
