TRACTOR-TRAILER FIRE ON I-40 IN ROANE COUNTY CREATES TRAFFIC BACKUP
Interstate 40 eastbound at the 348-mile marker of I-40 in Roane County was shut down for over an hour this morning for a tractor-trailer fire.
It resulted in a 6-mile backup up the mountain to near the Airport Road exit.
Many motorists detoured at the Westel Exit and took Highway 70 down to Rockwood. It resulted in the highway being bumper to bumper with a couple of accidents reported.
Roane County EMA Director Tim Suter said the tractor-trailer’s rear tires caught on fire and caused substantial damage to the trailer. He said that part of the contents was lighter fluid so response was merited by numerous agencies that did a good job getting the fire contained to the rear of the trailer.
No injuries were reported.
As of 2 p.m. Eastern, traffic remains backed up on I-40 heading down Rockwood Mountain to the scene of the fire.
