Very limited public information has been released from promoters of the 9th Annual Rocky Top Diesel Shoot out or the Crossville Dragstrip on an accident Friday Night July 29th that resulted in the death of Thomas J. Borrell, 37, aka “Turba Tom”  from Quarryville, Pennsylvania.  The accident resulted in the cancellation of the entire weekend’s events.

Borrell succumbed to injuries he received when his car failed to stop at the end of the dragstrip during Friday Evenings events.

According to friends, Borrell embodied the true meaning of the term “grassroots“, he demonstrated to others that anything is possible. Borrell was a man who demonstrated to the world that one does not need $1 million in order to build a diesel truck and compete against the big boys.

“Turba Tom had the ability to positively impact the lives of everyone he interacted with,” said one friend. He was a great car racer at Rocky top diesel shootout and enjoyed coming to Crossville. Turbo Tom represented the average person who competed in the race under his own terms.  A lone individual working out of his 2 car garage with his welder and the help of a few friends.  He managed to stay competitive without the assistance of a big-name sponsor.
