There is a multiple vehicle accident at the 338 westbound mile marker of I-40 in Cumberland County at this time (3:26 p.m. central time, Friday, August 23, 2019).

This has created a SIGNIFICANT backup that presently is nearly half way down Rockwood Mountain and growing.

Motorists in Roane County approaching Cumberland County on I-40 westbound are encouraged to get off at the Rockwood/Harriman Exit (Hwy 27 – Exit 347) head south through Rockwood and get on Highway 70. Proceed west until you get to Westel. (there is a sign for I-40 there) Turn right and proceed to I-40. This will put you on the other side of the crash site.

TDOT is estimating a clearing time of 6 p.m. central.
