TRIAL BEGINS FOR FORMER EMPLOYEES INVOLVED IN PILOT/FLYING J REBATE SCHEME

The trial of four former Pilot/Flying J employees accused of fraud charges is set to begin today. One of those facing charges is the former president of the company Mark Hazelwood. Hazelwood, along with Scott Wombold, Heather Jones and Karen Mann, is set to appear in U.S. District Court in Chattanooga. The case was moved from Knoxville to Chattanooga because of pre-trial publicity. The trial is expected to last about six weeks. Wombold is a former vice-president of national accounts with Mann and Jones former account reps. All are accused of conspiring with others at the company to cheat trucking firms out of millions of dollars worth of fuel rebates. Eight employees were originally indicted in the fraud scheme. Four of those defendants pleaded guilty earlier this year and are scheduled to be sentenced in January. Pilot CEO and owner of the Cleveland Browns, Jimmy Haslam, brother to Gov. Bill Haslam, has not been implicated and says he knew nothing about the alleged plot. To date, Pilot has paid $92 million in fines in the case. The company has also paid out around $85 million in order to settle claims with those trucking firms who allege they were deceived in the scheme.
