TVA SEEKS PUBLIC COMMENT ON DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT FOR TRANSMISSION SYSTEM UPGRADES
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has opened a public comment period for a Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) designed to evaluate the environmental effects of transmission system activities related to new generator interconnections.
The review runs from October 21 through November 19, 2026, and establishes a streamlined framework for National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews. This framework will support upcoming transmission projects under TVA’s generator interconnection procedures and allow for efficient, tiered site-specific environmental reviews when required.
Addressing Growing Energy Demands
The initiative comes as the region experiences a surge in electricity demand driven by:
-
Population growth
-
Advanced manufacturing expansion
-
Rapidly growing data processing and artificial intelligence needs
To meet these demands and maintain grid reliability, TVA has committed over $13 billion in planned investments through fiscal year 2029. This includes an annual investment of more than $1 billion dedicated to strengthening its existing generation fleet and transmission system.
