A social media handyman ad has led to the arrest of two individuals accused of stealing thousands from local residents.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), the investigation began on July 3, 2026, when Deputy Dustin Cravens responded to a report of aggravated burglary, theft, and forged checks. Investigators identified the suspects as David Hampton, 40, of Jackson County, and Cortnie Hill, 40, of Cookeville.

Authorities say Hampton connected with victims through social media advertisements offering handyman services. While working inside a victim’s residence, Hampton and Hill allegedly stole home goods and personal checks. Hampton was already wanted in neighboring Jackson County for a similar crime.

Key Details of the Arrests

• Vehicle Search: On July 8, 2026, deputies arrested Hampton and searched his vehicle, discovering marijuana, cocaine, and stolen checks—some blank and others already altered for cash. Detectives Boyer and Etheredge later confirmed these belonged to additional local victims.

• Property Recovered: Hill was arrested later the same day and surrendered most of the stolen goods. PCSO officials noted Hill attempted to conceal an expensive piece of jewelry upon law enforcement’s arrival.

• Full Confessions: During interrogations led by Detectives Garrett, Boyer, and Etheredge, both suspects confessed to multiple thefts and forgeries across Putnam and Jackson counties.

• Additional Jail Charges: After being booked, officials discovered Hampton had swallowed several bags of drugs, resulting in an additional contraband charge.
