VEC ADVISING CUSTOMERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA COMMENT SCAM

VEC wants to advise customers of a social media scam used on their channels. Over the past several weeks, VEC has notified customers of various power outages.

Within the comments on these posts, fake user accounts have posted comments reportedly showing a video of why the power outage took place. What appears to be a link to a YouTube video will redirect you to a malicious website.

VEC monitors all comments made on their social media channels. When they identify these types of scams, VEC officials hide the comment and block the user commenting.

As you can see in this screenshot, the commenter’s username changes routinely, and even on the comments where VEC blocked the user, the same comment may be posted again by an additional fake account.

This is a Facebook issue. The only action a person who runs that social media channel can take is to delete the comment and block the user.

If you see a hyperlink that looks like a YouTube video within a comment, you should NOT click on the link.
