Warnings Issued Ahead of Windstorm

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for some of the higher elevations and foothills of the East Tennessee Mountains from 2:00 PM this afternoon to 4:00 PM EST Tuesday. This includes Blount County and Monroe County in the 3B Media News coverage area.
Southeast winds 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 80 mph expected. Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Fire danger will be greatly increased until rain arrives.
People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.
In addition, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for strong gusty winds and low humidity for the East Tennessee Mountains and extreme Southwest North Carolina. This includes Blount County and Monroe County in the 3B Media News coverage area. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.
South to southeast winds across the higher elevations and foothills will increase to between 25 and 50 mph Monday afternoon, then gusts will increase to between 40 and 70 mph Monday night. Up to 80 mph gusts will be possible in some locations. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or expected to occur shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
