The National Weather Service is now confirming two tornadoes hit White County during severe weather last week.

The first was rated an EF1 with peak winds of 105 miles per hour. It touched down around 7:55 p.m. Wednesday night three miles north-northeast of Doyle and traveled to two miles south of Sparta with a maximum width of 250 yards. The tornado touched down on Gum Spring Mountain where a house completely lost its roof along with dozens of trees getting uprooted and snapped. An outbuilding and barn were also damaged. The tornado continued east bringing down trees and powerlines before finally hitting the National Guard Armory on McMinnville Highway where numerous large pine trees were snapped. The tornado lifted just before reaching Highway 111.

The second tornado, also rated an EF1, hit just 7 minutes later touching down three miles east-northeast of Sparta and was on the ground for 7 minutes before going away just west of the White/Cumberland County line. The tornado touched down just west of Blue Springs Road and snapped several trees along with destroying a barn. A covered porch was also destroyed at this location as well as the roof of a single story home. The tornado continued eastward across a holler/valley before causing extensive tree damage on James Lambert Road. Several outbuildings and barns were completely destroyed as well as extensive damage to a mobile home. The tornado went up a mountain and back down and then hit a barn/outbuilding on Cross Street. The tornado finally lifted near Viola Drive just east of the DeRossett community where further minor tree damage was observed.

No injuries were initially reported in either tornado in White County.

The National Weather Service says five tornadoes struck Wednesday night in Tennessee. Besides the two in White County, an EF-1 tornado hit Lawrenceburg and an EF-0 tornado hit Bedford County and Warren County.
