WHITE COUNTY EXECUTIVE SAYS PROPOSED LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT WON’T INCREASE TAXES

According to White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson, the proposed settlement between the county and Sheriff Odie Shoupe will not increase taxes. Robinson said that the county’s coffers are now taxed to their limit and that other departments will have to “take some hits in order to fund this.” The county is facing at least three additional lawsuits at this time: One lawsuit is against Sheriff Shoupe’s search procedures and the other two concerns a birth control program that had been offered to male and female inmates at the county jail. In the meantime, the sheriff’s department has begun advertising to hire 10 new correction officers. Robinson said that the settlement will consist of phasing in new officers, training and equipment over a three-year stretch. The sheriff’s department has already begun advertising for 10 new correctional officers. The county executive stated that the next thing on the agenda will be to work on jail over-crowding issues.
