WHITE COUNTY JAIL FACES DE-CERTIFICATION DUE TO OVERCROWDING ISSUES

Another regional jail facility is facing de-certification due to overcrowding issues. Rhea County Jail was recently mandated to do something about their overcrowding issue. Now White County has been given the same orders. Sparta Live reports that officials with the Tennessee Corrections Institute have given the county notice to do something by Sept. 6, 2017 or face de-certification. During a recent inspection tour, agents found the jail housing 227 inmates when it is certified to house 165. Around 50 of those are state inmates. The county must show a course-of-action plan by the deadline or face non-accreditation. A steering committee has begun in-depth discussions of the issue to develop a plan to present to the full commission.
