WITNESSES SAY WRONG-WAY DRIVER ON I-40 DELIBERATELY CAUSED FATAL CRASH

Witnesses to a wrong-way accident on I-40 Westbound in Knoxville early Saturday say 30-year-old Kara D. Wakefield of Knoxville seemed to be deliberately trying to hit other vehicles.

Investigators say Wakefield’s vehicle slammed into a vehicle driven by 56-year-old Darrell Guilliams of Knoxville, killing him. Wakefield, who was injured, was taken to U.T. Medical Center in serious condition. Wakefield’s dog also died in the crash.

The crash occurred near the Liberty Street overpass.

A third vehicle was struck by debris from the crash, but the driver was uninjured. He told police it seemed as though Wakefield had made “an aggressive move” to intentionally strike the other car.

Two other witnesses also claimed Wakefield had made “an aggressive attempt to strike” their vehicle in the vicinity of the Papermill exit.

Wakefield is a defendant in a November 28, 2018 DUI case in Loudon County. She was stopped by authorities after reportedly driving about 90 mph on Interstate 75, then slowing to about 60. Warrants indicate Wakefield admitted to having had several drinks and smoked marijuana. Wakefield is due in court in Loudon County later this month.
