WOMAN BLAMES ESTRANGED HUSBAND FOR FRAUD ON HER ACCOUNT

On April 14, 2025, at around 4:50 AM, Officer Amy Sherrill responded to a theft report at the Cumberland County Justice Center. The complainant reported multiple unauthorized charges on her credit and debit cards, alleging her estranged husband fraudulently accessed her bank accounts to make payments to himself and others. The couple is legally married but in the process of divorce, with the complainant having filed in October 2024. The accounts were solely in her name.
She reported a canceled $900.00 transaction from her Upper Cumberland Credit Union account on February 24, 2025, and subsequently closed the account to prevent further unauthorized access. She also reported unauthorized PayPal transactions, including a $39.40 payment to another individual, a $606.00 payment, and a $151.50 payment, all linked to her PayPal account. She canceled these transactions, though one cancellation was still pending. Emails showed her PayPal account’s email address was changed to her husband’s. She also mentioned her husband admitted to ordering blank checks in her name, which were unusable due to her account changes.
The complainant attempted to obtain an order of protection but faced delays due to lacking a permanent address for her husband. Officer Sherrill assisted in locating a publicly listed address and advised that, due to their legal marriage, criminal actions were uncertain. The case was forwarded to detectives for review, and Officer Sherrill documented the transactions with photos stored as digital evidence. The incident occurred in Crossville, TN.
