WOMAN CLAIMS 5-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER POSSIBLY EXPOSED TO HIV AT VANDERBILT

After our story aired on Vanderbilt endoscopy patients’ potential exposure to HIV or Hepatitis, we are now hearing from a patient’s mom. She said the exposure could have impacted Vanderbilt’s Children’s Hospital with a longer time frame.

She told FOX 17 News she was terrified and showed us documentation of a letter that said her child might have been exposed to HIV or Hepatitis.

Amber Holloway claims she took her then 5-year-old daughter Adalynn to the Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt last year for a colonoscopy.

“Oh that is my baby, she means a lot to me,” said Holloway, “I can’t imagine something like that for her to have to live with for the rest of her life.”

She said Vanderbilt staff told her on the phone it was because of equipment not being properly sterilized.

She said she received a letter from her myhealth at Vanderbilt portal about the potential exposure and she said it made things real for her.

In the letter she sent us, it read ” During routine quality reviews, we identified a discrepancy in sterilization documentation relating to the scope used in Adalynn’s procedure.”

It also read, ” While scopes that were not properly sterilized could potentially expose a patient to viruses such as Hepatitis B or C or HIV, we believe the exposure risk to your child is extremely low.”

Also, inside the letter, she said Vanderbilt Medical Center apologized.

“I mean they can say that to everybody but as long as they don’t have to, you know what I am trying to say, like take accountability for it,” she said.

Adult patients reached out to FOX 17 News previously and said they received the same warning.

Vanderbilt Medical Center responded to our inquiry then and said staffers “immediately corrected the issue” and the issue was “in how a solution was administered through the scope during a limited number of endoscopy procedures at the Vanderbilt Clinic.”

They also said, “We are focusing on notifying those who may have been affected. It is less than 4% of endoscopy patients over the last six months.”

FOX 17 News asked Vanderbilt Medical Center about possible exposure to their Children’s hospital outside the six-month window.

John Howser, the Chief Communications Officer with Vanderbilt Medical Center said in response, “Thank you for the opportunity to respond. At this time we are not able to answer any additional questions.”

Even though Holloway said her child tested negative, she said it is not over for her yet.

“I would like to see my child and every other patient that was involved to you know have justice for it,” she said.

Holloway said she plans to sue Vanderbilt.
