WOMAN INJURED, WORKER HURT AFTER CAR CRASHES THROUGH FIELD AND INTO BUILDING IN CROSSVILLE
A bizarre single-vehicle crash on Wednesday left a driver and a building worker injured after a car careened off the interstate, through a field, and into a local business.
According to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), the incident occurred on June 24, 2026, at approximately 311 Interstate Lane near Interstate 40 Eastbound.
Authorities state that a 2011 Toyota Camry, driven by 64-year-old Bethiny C. Stumbaugh, was traveling eastbound on I-40 when it exited at the 311 off-ramp. Instead of stopping, the vehicle crossed Plateau Road and continued past the entrance ramp, traveling straight through an open field.
The Camry then crashed through a fence, crossed Interstate Lane, and slammed directly into the north side of a commercial building.
A worker inside the building, identified as 27-year-old Christopher Bess, was struck by the vehicle during the collision. Bess sustained injuries in the crash, though his current condition has not been released.
Stumbaugh was also injured in the crash. State troopers noted that she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. A passenger in her vehicle, 60-year-old Jimmy David Dougherty, was buckled in and escaped the incident without injury.
The THP indicated that multiple charges are currently pending against Stumbaugh as the investigation into what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway continues.
